Engineering at Henderson Middle School focuses on introducing students to engineering as a career as well as teaching students the skills associated with a career as an engineer. Introducing engineering to middle school students consists of getting them excited about the field of engineering and how it directly and positively impacts their everyday lives and how it meets the needs and wants of the 21st century. As students begin to learn skills associated with engineering we focus heavily on the engineering design process as a foundation for all problem solving activities.  Engineering skills such as planning, researching, designing, collaborating with people different from them, and troubleshooting provide the framework needed for students to confidently solve problems.  When these skills are taught correctly and reinforced, students begin to independently tear into problems and issues, which is an invaluable trait students can carry with them as they solve authentic problems in the 21st century.

In this course, students learn about the nature of technology and problem solving. Students have opportunities to study the scope of technology and its impact on society. They learn about the core concepts of technology and about the various approaches to solving problems, including engineering design and experimentation. Students participate in engineering-design activities to understand how criteria, constraints and processes affect designs. Students are involved in activities and experiences where they learn about brainstorming, visualizing, modeling, constructing, testing, experimenting and refining designs. Students also develop skills in researching for information and communicating design information.
