Parent Workshop Descriptions and Calendar for Spring 2017

January 17th and 19th Seven Habits of a Good Reader

Parents will be provided with instructional strategies that are used in the Language Arts content area as well as helpful resources that can assist their student’s learning outside of the classroom. The focus will be on implementation of the Seven Habits of A Good Reader.

January 24th and 26th R.A.C.E. To Success

Parents will be introduced to the R.A.C.E. strategy, which can be used in all content areas and as a helpful resource that can assist their student’s learning outside of the classroom. The RACE strategy is used when answering short response questions. The strategy is Restate the question, Answer the question, Cite the source, and Explain your response. We will teach parents the strategy, give examples, and then practice this strategy so parents can help support their students.

February 7th and 9th APPs & Online Resources

Parents will be introduced to a variety of computer programs/applications that focus on assisting students with studying, improving their academic performance, and mastering content standards. All resources can be used in as well as outside of the classroom.

February 16th and 21st Foldables and Interactive Notebooks in the Sciences

Parents will be provided with instructional strategies that are used in the Science content area related to their students’ interactive notebooks. Parents will be able to create a foldable used by students.

March 28th and March 30th 3D Modeling in the Core Areas

Parents will be provided with instruction in AutoDesk Inventor (Industry Certified 3D Modeling Software) and how it can be used to design solutions to problem-based activities within Math, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science. The 3D Modeling/Printing workshop will utilize an Industry Certified Software Program, AutoDesk Inventor Professional. Students at Henderson Middle School are utilizing this program in all of their courses to complete problem based activities assigned by their instructors. AutoDesk Inventor is a free program. This allows students and families to use this program at home to complete assignments. Students will then be able to use the MakerBot 3D Printers in the library to print off their assignments. Instructing parents on how to use AutoDesk Inventor Professional will provide an advantage to those parents looking to become more involved in their child's education at Henderson Middle School.
